Job Announcement for Temporary Positions for 50 Graduates in Agriculture to Promote Avocado Farming
Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), is implementing a program to engage youth in sustainable agriculture under the “Jenga Kesho” initiative. As part of the BBT-Avocado program, SUA and the Crop and Mixed Products Regulatory Authority (COPRA) are seeking 50 graduates with agricultural qualifications for a 12-month temporary engagement to provide extension services aimed at developing avocado farming in Tanzania. This initiative will be implemented during the 2025/2026 agricultural season as a preparation for avocado production. The program will be carried out in Rugwe District, Mbeya Region.
Positions Available
1. Position: Agricultural Officer (5 Positions)
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide professional advice to farmers and stakeholders in the avocado value chain by:
- Educating farmers on best practices for avocado farming, from land preparation to harvesting, value addition, storage, and market sales.
- Ensuring the quality of raw avocados from the farm to the storage facilities.
- Monitoring compliance with best farming practices among farmers.
- Preparing and submitting weekly reports on avocado farming progress in the work area.
- Compiling real needs for inputs, including seeds/seedlings, for farmers.
- Overseeing the distribution of agricultural inputs to farmers.
- Conducting small-scale on-farm research and trials to assess suitable seed varieties, fertilizers, or new technologies.
Qualifications:
- A graduate in Agriculture (Degree level) with the following requirements:
- Must be a trustworthy Tanzanian, diligent, and have good interpersonal skills.
- Age between 18 and 40 years.
- Hold a degree in Agricultural Science, Agronomy, Horticulture, or Crop Production from a recognized institution.
- Not currently employed or terminated from public service.
- Must not have a criminal record.
- Willing to work in various rural areas.
- Able to work independently.
- Ready to sign a temporary contract and receive a monthly stipend as specified.
2. Position: Assistant Agricultural Officer (45 Positions)
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide professional advice to farmers and other stakeholders in the avocado value chain by:
- Educating farmers on best practices for avocado farming.
- Ensuring the quality of raw avocados from the farm to storage.
- Monitoring farmer compliance with best practices.
- Preparing and submitting weekly reports on avocado farming progress.
- Compiling real needs for inputs for farmers.
Qualifications:
- A graduate in Agriculture (Diploma level) with the following requirements:
- Must be a trustworthy Tanzanian, diligent, and have good interpersonal skills.
- Age between 18 and 35 years.
- Hold a diploma in Agricultural Science, Agronomy, Horticulture, or Crop Production from a recognized institution.
- Not currently employed or terminated from public service.
- Must not have a criminal record.
- Willing to work in various rural areas.
