Overview
The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) is the largest public health research institution in Tanzania. It was established by the Parliament Act No. 23 of 1979 as a parastatal organization under the Ministry of Health.
The establishment of NIMR was in recognition by the government of the need to generate scientific information. required in the development of better methods and techniques of enhancing disease management, prevention and control in the country. The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) is a Parastatal Organization under the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children. The Institute is charged with carrying out, controlling, coordinating, registering, monitoring and promoting Health Research in Tanzania.
The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), Tanzania, is a government public health research institute under the Ministry of Health mandated to coordinate, promote and monitor health research in the Country. NIMR is part of a consortium known as Tackling Obstacles for Fighting Filarial infections and Podoconiosis (TAKeOFF). The consortium focuses on addressing barriers to Filarial (Lymphatic Filariasis and Onchocerciasis) infections and Podoconiosis elimination. NIMR through funding from German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is implementing five research Tasks that address challenges that delays the elimination efforts of Lymphatic Filariasis and Onchocerciasis in Tanzania.
