HSK Level 3
HSK (Level 3) tests candidates’ Chinese application ability, which corresponds to Level 3 of the Chinese Language Proficiency Standards for International Students and Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ( CEFR ) . Candidates who have passed HSK (Level 3) can use Chinese to complete basic communication tasks in life, study, work, etc., and can handle most of the communication tasks encountered when traveling in China.
- Subject of examination
HSK (Level 3) is mainly for candidates who study Chinese for three semesters (one and a half academic years) at a pace of 2-3 class hours per week , and master 600 most commonly used words and related grammar knowledge.
- Exam content
HSK (Level 3) has a total of 80 questions, divided into three parts: listening, reading and writing.

The entire test takes about 90 minutes (including 5 minutes for candidates to fill in their personal information).
1 . hearing
The first part consists of 10 questions. Listen to each question twice. Each question is a dialogue. Several pictures are provided on the test paper. Candidates choose the corresponding picture according to what they heard.
The second part consists of 10 questions. Listen to each question twice. For each question, one person speaks a short paragraph first, and the other person speaks a sentence based on the paragraph. This sentence is also provided on the test paper, and the examinee is required to judge right or wrong.
The third part consists of 10 questions. Listen to each question twice. Each question is a two-sentence dialogue between two people. The third person asks a question based on the dialogue. There are 3 options on the test paper. Candidates choose the answer based on what they heard.
The fourth part has a total of 10 questions. Listen to each question twice. Each question is a 4 to 5 – sentence dialogue between two people. A third person asks a question based on the dialogue. There are 3 options on the test paper, and candidates choose the answer based on what they hear.
2 . read
The first part consists of 10 questions. Provide 20 sentences, candidates to find the corresponding relationship.
The second part consists of 10 questions. One or two sentences are provided for each question. There is a blank in the sentence. Candidates should fill in the blank with words from the options provided.
The third part consists of 10 questions. Provide 10 short paragraphs, each paragraph with a question, candidates should choose the answer from 3 options.
3 . write
The first part consists of 5 questions. Each question provides several words and asks candidates to write a sentence using these words.
The second part consists of 5 questions. Each question provides a sentence with a space, and the test taker is required to write the correct Chinese character on the space.
- Score report
The HSK (Level 3) score report provides four scores for listening, reading, writing and total score. A total score of 180 is qualified.
