Chinese Proficiency Test HSK

In order to make the Chinese Proficiency Test ( HSK ) better serve Chinese learners, the Chinese-Foreign Language Exchange and Cooperation Center of the Ministry of Education of China has organized experts in the fields of Chinese and foreign language teaching, linguistics, psychology and educational measurement to fully investigate and understand overseas Chinese. On the basis of the actual Chinese teaching situation, absorb the advantages of the original HSK, draw on the latest research results of international language testing in recent years, and launch a new Chinese proficiency test ( HSK ).

  1. Exam Structure

HSK is an international standardized test of Chinese proficiency, which focuses on the ability of candidates who are not their first language to use Chinese to communicate in life, study and work. The HSK is divided into two parts: the written test and the oral test. The written test and the oral test are independent of each other. The written test includes HSK (Level 1), HSK (Level 2), HSK (Level 3), HSK (Level 4), HSK (Level 5) and HSK (Level 6); the oral test includes HSKK (Elementary), HSKK (Intermediate) and For HSKK (Advanced), the oral exam is recorded.

HSK (Level 5)
HSK (Level 4) HSKK (Intermediate)
HSK (Level 3)
HSK (Level 2) HSKK (Elementary)
HSK (Level 1)

  1. Exam level

The corresponding relationship between each level of HSK and the International Chinese Proficiency Standards and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ( CEFR ) are shown in the following table:

HSK vocabulary ” International Chinese

competency standard

European
Framework for Languages (CEFR)
HSK (Level 6) 5000 and above Level 5 C2
HSK (Level 5) 2500 C1
HSK (Level 4) 1200 Level 4 B2
HSK (Level 3) 600 Level 3 B1
HSK (Level 2) 300 secondary A2
HSK (Level 1) 150 Level 1 A1

Candidates who have passed HSK (Level 1) can understand and use some very simple Chinese words and sentences, meet specific communication needs, and have the ability to further learn Chinese.

Candidates who have passed HSK (Level 2) can communicate in Chinese simply and directly on familiar daily topics, reaching an advanced level in elementary Chinese.

Candidates who have passed HSK (Level 3) can use Chinese to complete basic communication tasks in life, study, work, etc., and can handle most of the communication tasks encountered when traveling in China.

Candidates who have passed HSK (Level 4) can talk about a wider range of topics in Chinese and communicate fluently with native Chinese speakers.

Candidates who have passed HSK (Level 5) can read Chinese newspapers and magazines, enjoy Chinese film and television programs, and give relatively complete speeches in Chinese.

Candidates who pass HSK (Level 6) can easily understand the Chinese information they hear or read, and can express their opinions fluently in Chinese in oral or written form.

  1. Exam Principles

HSK follows the principle of ” combining test and teaching ” . The test design is closely integrated with the current situation of international Chinese teaching and the use of teaching materials. The purpose is to ” promote teaching by test ” and ” promote learning by test ” .

HSK pays attention to the objectiveness and accuracy of evaluation, and pays more attention to the development of test takers’ Chinese application ability.

HSK sets clear test objectives to facilitate candidates to improve their Chinese application ability in a planned and effective manner.

  1. Exam use

HSK continues the positioning of the original HSK general (or general) Chinese proficiency test and is aimed at adult Chinese learners. Its achievements can meet diverse needs:

1 . It provides a reference basis for college admissions, divided classes, course exemptions, and credit awarding.

2 . Provide a reference basis for the hiring, training and promotion of staff by employers.

3 . Provide reference for Chinese learners to understand and improve their Chinese application ability.

4 . Provide a reference for relevant Chinese teaching units and training institutions to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching or training.

  1. Score report

One month after the test, candidates can log on to the Chinese test service website www.chinesetest.cn to check their scores. The HSK score report is issued by the Chinese-Foreign Language Exchange and Cooperation Center of the Ministry of Education, and the score is valid for two years from the test date.
