Minister of PMO-RALG, Innocent Bashungwa today presented to Parliament an estimate of the revenue and expenditure of the 2022/2023 financial year where he said TAMISEMI has applied for a permit to hire 10,000 new teachers.
“The available data shows that there are 17,034 primary schools with 12,033,594 students including those with special needs 60,825 and 4,175 secondary schools with 2,607,142 students including 11,106 special needs, a total of 258,291 teachers including 173,591 primary schools and 84,700 secondary teachers.”
“As of March, 2022 the needs of Primary School Teachers are 274,549 in a ratio of 1:60 (one teacher per 60 students), the existing is 173,591 and the shortage is 100,958 equivalent to 36.77% of the needs, the requirement of Teachers for Students with special needs for Primary Schools is 3,631, the existing is 1,517 and the shortage is 2,143 teachers equivalent to 59.02% of the needs, The needs of teachers for secondary schools are 159,443 available, 84,700 and the deficit is 74,743, equivalent to 46.87%.
“In response to the current teacher shortage, TAMISEMI has applied for approval to hire 10,000 Primary and Secondary School Teachers, out of which 5,000 are for pre-primary and primary schools and 5,000 for secondary schools, which will reduce the needs of secondary school teachers by 6.56% and pre-primary and primary education by 10.65%”
