Under the supervision of the Chief of Party, the Technical Director will be responsible for technical oversight of all project activities. He/she will work in close collaboration with NMCP, ZAMEP, and MOHCDGEC counterparts and malaria stakeholders to support a range of activities essential to malaria prevention, case management, monitoring, and surveillance in mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the strategy for and oversee the implementation of the project’s malaria case management and surveillance activities including facility and community case management activities, prevention of malaria during pregnancy, SBCC interventions, malaria surveillance, drug efficacy monitoring, entomological monitoring, and government of Tanzania and local partner capacity building
- Coordinate across technical streams (e.g., SBC, case management and service delivery, entomological monitoring, surveillance) to ensure project activities are cohesive and mutually reinforce one another to achieve project results;
- Provide general technical support to the NMCP and ZAMEP in malaria surveillance, data for decision-making, case management, malaria in pregnancy, and malaria prevention including SBC. This support includes developing tools, planning and overseeing trainings, participating in technical working groups, and providing technical leadership;
- Oversee the development and implementation of capacity building plans targeted towards health facility, local implementing partner, LGA, and national government (NMCP and ZAMEP) levels to strengthen their abilities in malaria case management and surveillance;
- Oversee and work closely with the Surveillance Lead to institutionalize the use of malaria surveillance and other malaria-related data in health facilities and among government partners to improve evidence-based decision-making and the quality of malaria services;
- Lead and contribute to work plan development and project reporting;
- Work with MEL Lead to monitor and evaluate the progress and impact of activities, guide operational research studies, and adapt programming based on iterative learning;
- Document and disseminate project results and impacts in various forms, including media stories, lessons learned, case studies, conferences, etc;
- Lead and supervise direct reports with particular focus on their key tasks and the quality of project deliverables;
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Medical degree required;
- Strong background in malaria epidemiology preferred;
- At least 10 years of experience implementing malaria programs in developing countries;
- Experience with entomological monitoring, drug efficacy monitoring, and malaria surveillance preferred;
- Ability to independently plan and execute complex tasks while addressing daily management details and remaining organized and focused on long-term deadlines and strategy;
- Possess outstanding professional reputation and have strong demonstrated interpersonal, written, and oral presentation skills;
- Willingness to travel within the country as needed;
- Oral and written English language required;
- Tanzanian nationals strongly encouraged to apply;
